In 1999, Nigeria went through a significant transition when Olusegun Obasanjo was elected as the president of the country, marking the return to democratic governance after several years of military rule. Obasanjo’s victory not only represented a pivotal moment for Nigeria but also held significant meaning for the Yoruba community.
He further explained that, Obasanjo’s presidency was identified by various reforms and ambition aimed at building up the nation and addressing its socio-economic challenges. During his eight-year tenure, he implemented policies to promote economic growth, fought corruption, and improved infrastructure. His administration played a crucial role in strengthening democratic institutions and fostering stability within Nigeria.
Charly Boy’s claims that Obasanjo is the only democratically elected Yoruba president who echoes the sentiment of many who acknowledge the historical significance of his presidency. As a prominent Yoruba figure, Obasanjo’s ascended to the highest office in the country. He also inspired pride among the Yoruba community.
However, he stated that the political landscape has evolved since Obasanjo’s presidency. In the recent 2023 elections, President Bola Ahmad Tinubu emerged victorious after a highly competitive race, nevertheless, Tinubu’s victory has faced opposition and legal challenges. Oppositions argued that the election was marred by electoral fraud, asserting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) favored President Bola Ahmad Tinubu through rigging.
Charly Boy’s statement not only highlights the uniqueness of Obasanjo’s presidency but also reflects the broader discussions surrounding the current state of Nigerian politics. His perspective contributes to the ongoing dialogue and diverse opinions surrounding the main figures and their respective roles in the nation’s governance.
In his post on tweeter, fans are of the opinion that no Nigerian president living or dead can match Obasanjo records as president. They equally emphasized that he is the only president whose influence puts Nigerians ahead of others African countries in the international community. Meanwhile, other fans are of the opinion that Obasanjo did nothing for Yorubaland to remember him.
These are some of the tweets:
‘’Yes sir and since then we have never had a President! Long life to him and grace filled with good health and above all Gods wisdom! Miss him though’’.
‘’I love baba very well, area father if I come to Nigeria anytime I which you will carry me go and greet him face to face’’.
