Eedris Abdulkareem, a Nigerian hip-hop icon, dominated the music scene in the 2000s, shaping the evolution and commercialization of rap in Nigeria.

During his appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Abdulkareem recounted a notorious airplane altercation with American rapper 50 Cent.

As part of the Nigerian Breweries music tour featuring 50 Cent as the headliner, Abdulkareem found himself in a dispute with the American rapper over a seat on the plane.

He had seated himself in the business class section, which 50 Cent’s crew claimed was reserved exclusively for the American artist. Abdulkareem refused to vacate the seat, citing an agreement with Nigerian Breweries to treat him on par with 50 Cent.

This disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation, allegedly captured on video by cinematographer DJ Tee.

The incident garnered significant media attention and even prompted President Obasanjo to direct the Inspector General of Police to intervene.

Following the altercation, Abdulkareem sought the support of then PMAN President Charlie Boy to defend his rights, utilizing the recorded tape as evidence.

However, Abdulkareem claimed that Charlie Boy betrayed him, leveraging the tape for personal gain instead. This betrayal resulted in his blacklisting by Charlie Boy just three days later.

Despite the setbacks, Abdulkareem expressed no regrets, viewing the incident as a necessary sacrifice for the advancement of the industry. He believed that his confrontation with 50 Cent compelled Nigerian brands to accord Nigerian artists the respect they deserved.

“It affected my career but it was a beautiful sacrifice that gave birth to Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and everybody today…Now they are flying their private jets”.

Eedris further went on to say that although his sacrifices are not appreciated by the stars who should, he takes pride in doing what was right and what God sent him to do.
