TAFM Festival Returns with an Exciting 2023 Lineup

The Annual Film Mischief (TAFM) festival is back with its second Pan African edition, set to showcase 22 selections from independent filmmakers in Africa. With the theme “Shoot The Culture,” the festival aims to present stories that celebrate African uniqueness in an innovative and global way. Film Rats Founder, Chukwu Martin, explains that TAFM is dedicated to promoting film education and documentation to improve filmmaking in Africa. This year, the festival captures the stories of filmmakers across Africa, spotlighting their works to celebrate unique styles and storytellers who go the extra mile to shoot the culture and redefine the narrative of the African experience.

This year’s official selections, which include documentaries and short films, have tripled in number from last year, with submissions from all over the continent. Uche Chika Elumelu, one of TAFM’s Festival Director duo, expresses excitement about the crop of filmmakers showcased this year, saying that nothing says “Young & African” quite like the vibrant push towards global acclaim. The festival is honoured to be a part of that narrative.

The festival’s virtual day tradition will continue this year, dedicating one day to virtual screenings and mischief sessions/discussions with industry professionals on interesting topics. TAFM will also hold its first annual FilmTech conference in partnership with Impact Hub Lagos’s Creative Fridays platform. The conference, tagged “Innovation For Local,” is for key creators and innovators, startups, and other stakeholders in the FilmTech space. The goal is to discuss initiatives that will pave the way for a globally competitive talent pool to effectively compete in the fourth revolution.

About TAFM’s Principal

TAFM’s jury is headed by Nwakaego Boyo, an award-winning actress and producer with 30 years of experience in consulting, producing, and financing films and media content. Other members of the jury include Ghanaian filmmaker Amartei Armar, Ugandan filmmaker Loukman Ali, Ghanaian film editor Magdalene Morton, and South African cinematographer Kabelo Thathe.

The festival, a program of The Film Rats Club, is sponsored by Viva Cinemas Nigeria, Impact Hub Lagos, Albantsho, mPharma & Cadbury PLC. This year’s edition, free to all, holds from April 27-30, 2023, with physical screenings in Lagos, Abuja, and Accra.
