The Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners’ Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of four notable actors within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The National President of TAMPAN, Bolaji Amusan, issued a statement on Monday, mourning the deaths of Murphy Afolabi, Saint Obi, Mukaila Adedigba, and Wasiu Adegbenro. Amusan described the news as a “rude shock” that has left TAMPAN and the Nigerian creative sector as a whole in a state of mourning.

Amusan extended his condolences to the families of the deceased actors and prayed that God grants them the strength to cope with their loss. He also called on Nigerian artists to pay proper attention to their health, noting that the increasing rate of untimely death in the creative sector is becoming worrisome.

The death of Saint Obi, a renowned actor, and filmmaker who passed away at the age of 57 after a long battle with illness, has sent shockwaves throughout the industry. Saint Obi, whose real name is Obinna Nwafor, was known for his exceptional acting skills and contributions to the Nigerian film industry. He began his acting career in the late 1990s and featured in several Nollywood movies, including “Take Me to Mama” and “Sakobi: The Snake Girl.” His death has left a significant void in the industry, and he will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends, and fans.

Similarly, the death of Murphy Afolabi, a talented actor, and filmmaker, has been described as a great loss to the industry. Afolabi reportedly died on Sunday, May 14, 2023, following complications from a slip in the bathroom. Afolabi was a versatile actor who featured in several popular movies, including “Igboya,” “Ori,” and “Enu Mi.” He was also a producer and director and made a significant contribution to the growth of the Nigerian film industry.

Mukaila Adedigba, a fast-rising actor, also passed away on May 13, 2023, after a brief illness. Adedigba was a promising talent who had just begun to make a name for himself in the industry. His death is a sad reminder of the need for Nigerian artists to take their health seriously and prioritize their wellbeing.

Wasiu Adegbenro, a sound recordist popularly known as Techno, also passed away on May 14, 2023. Adegbenro was a talented sound engineer who had worked on several movie soundtracks and had contributed significantly to the growth of the Nigerian film industry.

The deaths of these four notable figures have once again highlighted the need for Nigerian artists to prioritize their health. The creative industry can be a demanding sector, with long working hours, high levels of stress, and little time for rest and relaxation. Nigerian artists must learn to take care of themselves, both physically and mentally, to avoid falling victim to the increasing rate of untimely deaths in the industry.

TAMPAN has been at the forefront of efforts to improve the welfare of its members and the quality of life of Nigerian artists. The association has initiated several programs aimed at promoting the wellbeing of its members and has called on the government and private sector to invest in the creative sector. TAMPAN has also called on Nigerian artists to create time for recreation and take time off work to avoid burnout and stress.

Nigerian creative industry has lost four notable figures, and the impact of their deaths will be felt for years to come. It is essential for Nigerian artists to pay attention to their health, prioritize their wellbeing, and take the necessary steps to avoid burnout and stress.
