The Benue State Government has accused Peter Obi of breaching official visit protocol.
The former Anambra State governor visited the state on Tuesday. He planned to travel to Yelewata and sympathise with victims of the June 2025 attacks.
However, Commissioner for Information and Culture, Solomon Lorpev, said Governor Hyacinth Alia did not receive official notice of the visit.
According to Lorpev, the government had no formal information about Obi’s movement. It also could not make the necessary arrangements for his visit.
The situation took a different turn when Obi travelled towards Yelewata.
Suspected youths reportedly blocked the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway. The roadblock prevented Obi from continuing his journey.
Some reports linked the youths to supporters of a political party. However, authorities have not confirmed their political affiliation.
There is also no confirmed information on who organised the roadblock.
Meanwhile, the Benue Government has focused on the alleged breach of protocol.
Lorpev said Obi should have notified Governor Alia before visiting the state. He explained that prior notice would have helped the government coordinate the visit.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of proper communication. He said this becomes more important when prominent political figures visit the state.
Obi had planned to visit Yelewata because of the June 2025 attacks. He wanted to meet residents affected by the violence and offer his condolences.
The reported blockade, however, disrupted that plan.
The government’s complaint about protocol remains separate from the roadblock. There is currently no evidence that the Benue Government ordered or supported the blockade.
The incident has also raised questions about security coordination. Political visitors and state authorities often need proper communication during sensitive engagements.
For now, the Benue Government maintains its position. It says Obi breached protocol by failing to notify Governor Alia.
Questions remain about the youths who blocked the highway. Their identity, political affiliation and motive have not been independently established.
