In a recent interview, veteran Afrobeat producer and music executive ID Cabasa shared his timeless secret to staying creative and relevant in Nigeria’s fast-changing music industry: a mindset rooted in humility, curiosity, and continuous learning.
“I stay a learner,” Cabasa said.
“I stay a learner,” ID Cabasa said. “I ask the younger generation what they’re feeling and what’s trending. I don’t rely too much on past experience because what worked before may not work now.”
While ID Cabasa acknowledged that experience is valuable, he stressed that it can sometimes become a trap if artists get too comfortable.
“Experience is like a comb life gives you after you’ve lost your hair,” he said with a smile. “It’s easy to settle into what has worked, but real growth comes when you search for what will work next.”
As Nigeria’s soundscape rapidly shifts from Afrobeats to Amapiano and beyond, ID Cabasa emphasized the need to evolve with it.
“The sound is changing every month ,” he added. “If you’re not learning, you’re getting old creatively.”
