In a post on Instagram, AY shared details of the incident and the EFCC’s involvement. He used the opportunity to remind Nigerians about handling the Naira and foreign currencies responsibly at public events.
“I’m grateful to God for His mercy. On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited me about an incident involving the public spraying of local and foreign currencies an act that is classified as currency abuse,” AY wrote.
AY explained that the EFCC confirmed the money sprayed during the event was not linked to illegal activities. He thanked the authorities for their understanding and for pardoning him after they verified the funds were clean.
“I want to thank the EFCC and all the authorities for their understanding. They granted me a pardon after confirming the money sprayed was not connected to crime or illicit funds,” he added.
While spraying money is a common tradition in Nigerian celebrations, AY reminded everyone that this act could still have legal consequences. He encouraged Nigerians to follow the law when handling money at events.
“To my friends, family, and the general public: Spraying money is common at Nigerian celebrations like weddings and parties. It’s a cultural tradition, not a criminal act. But I want to share some important DOs and DON’Ts when spraying money.”
AY Makun pointed out that mutilating or abusing the Naira is illegal. Spraying, tearing, or mishandling money undermines its value and can lead to legal consequences.
“It’s important to understand that mistreating the Naira whether by spraying, tearing, defacing, or mishandling is a violation of Nigerian law. These acts harm the national currency and can have serious consequences,” he said.
The EFCC continues to raise awareness about the dangers of currency abuse. They urge Nigerians to respect the Naira and follow the law when using it.
