Burna Boy Breaks Spotify Nigeria Record with Most Streamed Song Debut

Written by on July 8, 2024

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu MFR, professionally known as Burna Boy, is not only a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer but also a trailblazer in the music industry. Moreover, his latest single, ‘Higher’, released in 2024, marks another monumental achievement in his career.

‘Higher’ takes listeners on an emotional journey back to Burna Boy’s roots in Port Harcourt. In classic Burna Boy style, the song shattered records on Spotify Nigeria with an unprecedented 2.3 million streams in its debut week, surpassing the previous record set by Rema & Shallipopi’s ‘Benin Boys’ with 2.1 million streams.

This achievement adds to Burna Boy’s accolades, as ‘Higher’ holds the highest opening day streams for a solo African artist on Spotify. Released on June 27, 2024, the song resonates with themes of gratitude and celebrating meaningful moments amidst success.

Beyond music, Burna Boy continues to redefine African representation on the global stage. His charitable efforts through “Project PROTECT,” in collaboration with The R.E.A.C.H., highlight his commitment to giving back to underserved communities in Nigeria.

Just ahead of his 2024 London stadium concert, where Burna Boy made history as the first African artist to sell out the 80,000-capacity venue twice, ‘Higher’ underscores his ongoing impact and influence in the music industry worldwide.
