Chelsea Woes Compound after Watford Loss

For the first time in 22 years, defending Premier League champions, Chelsea suffered back to back defeats by a margin of 3 goals. Antonio Conte’s men were beaten by Bournemouth (0-3) midweek at home before they were stung by the Hornets on the 5th of February.

The visitors went down to 10-men in the first half when Tiemoune Bakayoko was sent for his 2nd bookable offence. Watford then took the lead, when the ref awarded a penalty for a foul on on-loan winger Gerard Deulofeu by keeper Thiabaut Courtois. The home team’s captain Troy Deeney converted from the spot and they went into the break at 1-0.

After the break Chelsea equalised, through a wonderful goal from Eden Hazard. However, a flurry of 3 goals in the final 7 minutes gave Watford a deserved victory, with full-back Daryl Janmaat, Deulofeu & substitute Roberto Pereyra getting on the score sheet.

Conte said his team ;acked personality in the game though they displayed fight in the 2nd half. When asked if he is worried about losing his job, the Chelsea manager said;  “I’m not worried about my job,” he added. “I work everyday and I give 120%. OK? If this is enough, it’s OK. Otherwise the club can take a different decision. But I’m not worried. My conscience is clear. I go to sleep without a problem that maybe, maybe, I could do this or that. I try to do everything. If it’s not good, the club can take a different decision. Life goes on. For sure, this is a difficult moment. If we want to find excuses, alibis, we can find everything. Tiredness, injuries…but this is not my way to face the situation, to solve the problem.”
