Davido Says He Became Africa’s Most-Followed Artist by Being Real with Fans
Afrobeats sensation Davido has revealed why he holds the title of the most-followed African artist on social media, and it all comes down to keeping it real.

“I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans,”
The Nigerian music star, born David Adeleke, explained in a recent BET Talks interview that he built a massive online following by staying open and authentic with fans, something many other African artists avoid.
“I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans,” Davido said. “From the beginning of my career, I showed people my life through vlogs. Many Nigerian and African artists fear showing their true selves.”
Davido credited his upbringing in the United States for helping him adopt a more open mindset.
“Living in America opened my mind. I’m not saying my people are ignorant, but most African artists avoid showing themselves in casual moments. I take pictures in shorts and slippers. When it’s time to turn up, I turn up!”
He also pointed out that many celebrities in Nigeria overthink their public image.
“Some Nigerian celebs overdo things online. I just relax and go with the flow. Fans love that. I still see myself as a regular guy.”
With over 35 million followers across Instagram, Twitter (X), and TikTok, Davido proves that staying true to yourself can go a long way, even in the spotlight.
