British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has opened up about coming out to her Nigerian parents as a lesbian and their reactions.

In a recent interview on ‘The Appointment Show’ with Layo, Darkoo shared her journey of revealing her truth to her family.
She expressed relief after telling her mother, saying, āThe day I told my mum, I felt a massive weight off my shoulders. I’ve been happy since then.ā She noted that she feels more content now that everyone in her professional life knows who she is.

Darkoo explained that while sharing her truth was more challenging with her mother due to their close bond, her fatherās reaction was somewhat easier, though he wasn’t fully open to the conversation. āIt was harder with my mum because Iām closer to her, and it was very emotional.
My dad didnāt want to have the conversation, but he didnāt stop it either,ā she said.
She emphasized that, regardless of her parentsā beliefs, she is living authentically. āThis is what makes me happy. I feel whole, and Iām not faking it. This is me. I have a good relationship with God, and my heart is clean and pure,ā Darkoo continued.

While her Nigerian parents may not fully align with her sexuality, she feels their love and acceptance.
āI bring girls home, and my parents donāt mind. They love me for who I am. I know they donāt think what Iām doing is right because theyāre African, but they love me, and thatās what matters,ā she concluded.
