San Antonio police responded to reports of a shooting around 7 p.m. on the city’s South Side and found Joss with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency efforts, paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja shortly after the shooting and charged him with murder. Ceja remains in custody at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, with bond set at $200,000.
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, said the shooting happened while they were checking mail at their old home, which burned down earlier this year. Gonzales claimed Ceja approached them, hurled homophobic slurs, and opened fire. He said Joss pushed him out of the line of fire, saving his life.
Although Gonzales believes hate motivated the attack, San Antonio police said their investigation has not found any evidence that links the shooting to Joss’s sexual orientation. They added that they will pursue additional charges if new evidence emerges.
Joss, who was of Comanche and White Mountain Apache heritage, built a respected acting career centered on Native American roles. He voiced John Redcorn from Season 2 through the end of King of the Hill and was set to reprise the role in Hulu’s upcoming reboot. His other notable roles included Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation and appearances in Tulsa King, Ray Donovan, and True Grit.
Fans and colleagues across the entertainment world have expressed shock and grief at the sudden loss of Joss, remembering him as both a talented performer and a proud representative of Indigenous culture in Hollywood.
