Nigerian rapper Olamide Adedeji sparked a fresh wave of debate on Tuesday night after naming Wizkid the greatest Afrobeats artist since Fela Kuti. The moment happened on November 13, 2025, during a student Q&A event at York University in Toronto, and honestly, the room reacted the way you’d expect. In fact, it split into half cheers and half hushed “wait, what?” energy.
While answering a question about the evolution of Afrobeats, Olamide paused, thought for a second, and then said he believed Wizkid sits next in line after Fela. He pointed to the singer’s global catalogue, especially records like “Essence,” a song that basically became a worldwide warm-up track. He also mentioned the history-making collaborations with Drake, which, in his view, helped pull Afrobeats deeper into the international mainstream.
And because Afrobeats fans don’t joke around, the moment the clip hit social media, it turned into a three-way digital stadium. Supporters of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy each came armed with their own stats, such as streams, sold-out arena tours, Grammy wins, global charts, the whole scoreboard.
It felt a bit like a musical counterpoint playing out in real time, with everyone trying to hit the highest note.
A few hours later, Olamide posted on X and softened the edges a bit. He wrote that people should appreciate all three superstars because there’s “room for everyone’s greatness.” In other words, he seemed to be reminding fans that Afrobeats is bigger than Stan wars and that the genre thrives when the conversation stays about the music.
