“The Headies Should Matter More to Nigerian Artists Than the Grammys”: Lojay
Nigerian singer Lojay has boldly declared that the Headies Awards hold more value for Nigerian artists than the Grammys.

“We don’t gain anything from the Grammys being bigger than The Headies. But if The Headies becomes bigger, we all gain.”
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the Grammy-nominated singer Lojay urged Nigerian musicians to support and prioritize local award shows like The Headies over international ones.
“As sweet as the Grammys and other international awards are, Nigerian artists will never be a priority in those spaces,” Lojay said. “We are still fighting just to be included in pop categories. Tems made one of the most beautiful R&B albums last year, and they gave her ‘Best African Music Performance’ instead.”
Lojay, who won Best Male Vocal Performance at the 17th Headies, called for more recognition of African talent within African spaces. “I want a world where The Headies is so big that even American stars like Travis Scott fly to Nigeria to pick up their awards,” he added.
The “Monalisa” hitmaker stressed that while global recognition is nice, building and uplifting Nigerian award platforms benefits the industry more. “We don’t gain anything from the Grammys being bigger than The Headies. But if The Headies becomes bigger, we all gain,” he said.
Lojay ended by expressing his deep faith in Nigeria and its talent. “I believe in Nigeria. I believe in our people and in our music going global. Let’s stop looking down on what’s ours.”
