It was a big night for Nigerian superstar Wizkid and Tems as their collaborative song âEssenceâ off Wizkidâs Made in Lagos album won the “Best Collaboration” category at the 2021 Soul Train Awards defeating songs like âGo Crazy Remixâ by Chris Brown, âKiss Me Moreâ by Doja Cat, âCome Throughâ by H.E.R, âGirl Like Meâ by Jazmine Sullivan, and âYouâre Mines Stillâ by Yung Bleu featuring Drake.
Wizkid and Tems were nominated for five awards apiece at the 2021 Soul Train Awards, as Wizkid was nominated for âAlbum of the Yearâ with Made in Lagos while Tems was nominated for the âBest New Artistâ.
They were also jointly nominated for the âSong of The Yearâ, âVideo of The Yearâ, âThe Ashford and Simpson songwriterâsâ award, and âBest Collaborationâ for the smash hit song, âEssenceâ which they eventually won.
Other winners on the night includes, Bruno Mars, Anderson. Paak (Silk Sonic) with their song âLeave the Door Openâ which won âSong of the Yearâ, âVideo of the Yearâ, and âThe Ashford and Simpson Songwriterâs Awardâ.
Jazmine Sullivan won âAlbum of the Yearâ and âBest R&B/Soul Female Artisteâ while Giveon won âBest R&B/Soul Male Artisteâ.
The âBest Gospel/Inspirational Awardâ went to Kirk Franklin, while Normani featuring Cardi B, âWild Sideâ won âBest Dance Performanceâ and the âBest New Artistâ which Tems was also nominated went to Yung Bleu.
