Afrobeats superstar Davido has stirred up positive conversations online after proudly affirming his Igbo roots in response to a tribal remark aimed at him on social media.
The drama began on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, when an X (formerly Twitter) user, @Yakbel, threw shade at Davido for being too close to the Igbo community. The post warned the Nigerian singer to avoid associating with Igbos, claiming they would eventually betray him.

In a quick and powerful clapback, the singer wrote, “Lol, I AM IGBO by blood.”
The bold response quickly went viral, with fans and fellow Nigerians praising the “Unavailable” crooner for taking a stand against tribalism and promoting unity across cultures.
Davido’s statement came just a day after he hosted highlife legend Bright Chimezie at his Lagos home. The two had connected over Chimezie’s 2018 hit “Because of English,” which Davido credited as the inspiration for his new single “With You” featuring Omah Lay.
Aside from his musical collaborations, Davido has deep personal ties to the Igbo community. His wife, Chioma Adeleke, is from Imo State, and his late grandmother, Esther Nnena Adeleke, also hailed from an Igbo background.
