By : EZURUMEM OBINNA
Grammy-nominated afro-house singer Niniola Apata shook the internet on Wednesday when she announced the death of her husband, Michael Ndika in the most raw, gut-punch way imaginable. No press release. No manager’s statement. Just a woman, her grief, and her Instagram story.
Five Posts. One Devastated Heart.
Niniola posted a series of five back-to-back stories in the early hours of Wednesday, each one carrying a photo of the couple together. The words were few but they hit like a freight train.
First post: “God took him.” Second: “My husband died.” Third: “God took him. 13 years. 13 f***ing years.” No long caption. No explanation. Just thirteen years of a private, protected love suddenly out in the open because there was no other way to say it.
The Man Behind the Name
Michael Ndika, popularly known as Big Mike, was no stranger to the Nigerian music scene. He served as Chief Executive Officer of NaijaReview, a multimedia platform built around afro-house and contemporary African music the very genre his wife helped put on the global map.
The circumstances of his death have not been disclosed. Niniola has always guarded her personal life fiercely, and even in grief, she kept the details close.
A Star Who Earned Every Stripe
Niniola, 39, first turned heads as a standout contestant on Project Fame West Africa in 2013. From there, she built one of the most distinctive sounds in African music. Her 2017 smash Maradona went properly global earning nods from DJ Snake, Drake, Timbaland, and Beyoncé. That is not a small list.
Through all of it, Michael was the man beside her quietly, consistently, away from the cameras.
The Internet Feels It
Since the posts dropped, condolences have poured in from fans, fellow artists, and the broader Nigerian entertainment community. Words like “devastated” and “heartbroken” keep appearing because Niniola has always been beloved, and seeing her hurt this publicly hits differently.
She never asked for the spotlight on her marriage. But when it mattered most, she let the world in — five posts at a time.
