Nigeria’s political leaders are making a peace pledge ahead of 2027.
Political parties, presidential candidates and National Assembly candidates have signed Nigeria’s first National Peace Accord on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The stakeholders made the commitment in Abuja at a ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre. The agreement came ahead of the commencement of public campaigns and rallies for the elections.
Under the accord, the signatories pledged to promote peaceful and issue-based campaigns while rejecting violence, hate speech, misinformation, personal attacks and other conduct that could undermine the electoral process.
The ceremony brought together major stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral process. Among them were the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, political party leaders, presidential candidates and National Assembly candidates.
In addition, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu attended the event, alongside representatives of the diplomatic community and other stakeholders.
Furthermore, the agreement seeks to encourage political actors to focus their campaigns on policies, programmes and issues that directly affect Nigerians rather than resorting to personal attacks or inflammatory rhetoric.
President Bola Tinubu also endorsed the accord through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who represented him at the ceremony.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the Social Democratic Party candidate, Adewole Adebayo, and the African Action Congress candidate, Omoyele Sowore, also signed the agreement.
The commitments come at a time when political parties are preparing to intensify their mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections. Consequently, stakeholders have placed renewed emphasis on maintaining peace amid increasing political competition.
The National Peace Accord represents a commitment by political actors to respect democratic rules and avoid actions that could create tension during the election period.
In particular, the pledge against misinformation and hate speech places greater responsibility on candidates and their supporters to verify information before sharing it.
Similarly, the commitment to issue-based campaigns could encourage voters to assess candidates based on their policies, records and proposed solutions to national challenges.
However, the effectiveness of the accord will ultimately depend on how consistently political parties and candidates honour their commitments.
As the 2027 election campaign season approaches, Nigerians will now watch how the signatories translate their promises into responsible political conduct across the country.
