Manchester City midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan tests positive for coronavirus ahead of Premier League opener

Ilkay Gundogan, the Manchester City midfielder, has tested positive for Covid-19 to further complicate Pep Guardiola’s team selection ahead of their Premier League opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Gundogan becomes the third City player to return a positive test since the start of the season following Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez.

City announced the positive result on Monday morning September 21, ruling the former Borussia Dortmund star out of today’s clash as he will now enter a 10-day isolation period.

Gundogan will also be forced to miss this week’s Carabao Cup match against Bournemouth and next weekend match against Leicester City at the Etihad.

A statement from City said: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Ilkay is now observing a 10-day period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine. Everyone at the Club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”

Gundogan becomes the latest City player to test positive for the virus after Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte both returned positive tests two weeks ago.
