The police confirmed that the plot was orchestrated by a group promoting hate speech and attempting to radicalize teenagers. According to authorities, the suspects were planning to target LGBTQ+ individuals during Lady Gaga’s record-breaking concert at Copacabana Beach, which attracted over 2 million fans.

Felipe Cury, secretary of the Rio police, confirmed the motive during a press conference on Sunday. He said:

“They were clearly saying they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert, motivated by sexual orientation.”

The police kept the plot under wraps at first to avoid panic and prevent misinformation. Security at the concert was tight, with over 5,200 military and police officers deployed to ensure the safety of fans as they enjoyed Lady Gaga’s iconic hits, including ‘Born This Way’, which has become an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community.

Lady Gaga’s team responded to the attack plot, confirming that they learned about the threat from the media. A spokesperson for the team stated:

“Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks.”

The spokesperson also emphasized that Lady Gaga’s team had worked closely with law enforcement during the planning and execution of the concert, and they were confident in the safety measures in place.
