Tems Reveals Why She Quit Her Digital Marketing Job to Chase Music Dreams

The Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Tems, quit her digital marketing job to follow her passion for music — a bold move that transformed her life.

In a recent interview with Billboard, the “Love Me Jeje” hitmaker said she felt spiritually disconnected from her 9-to-5 life and decided to follow her passion, even when the future felt uncertain.

“I couldn’t take it anymore,” Tems said. “It hit me that it was now or never. I had to build faith that God would guide me.”

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, quit her job in January 2018. Six months later, she released her debut single “Mr Rebel”, which began her journey into the spotlight.

“I knew digital marketing wasn’t my path,” she explained. “It felt like life or death. I needed to make a decision that would shape my destiny — so I quit, and it worked.”

Tems first gained global attention in 2020 after her feature on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence,” which reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2022, she made history as the first African artist to debut at No. 1 on the chart with Future’s “Wait For U” featuring Drake and Tems — a track that later earned her a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

In 2024, she picked up another Grammy Award, this time for Best African Music Performance with “Love Me Jeje.”

Tems’ story proves that taking a leap of faith and believing in your purpose can lead to incredible success
