Peter Okoye Ditches Shared Birthday With Twin Brother, Tells Fans to Deal With It

By :Obinna Ezurumem

Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has announced he will no longer celebrate his birthday on November 18  the date he has shared his entire life with twin brother Paul Okoye and is moving it to November 30. The announcement on the new date  landed on social media yesterday  and fans have not stopped talking since.

The Declaration

Peter, formerly one half of the iconic Afrobeats duo P-Square, made the announcement without warning and without apology. He told followers the decision is final. When backlash rolled in  and it rolled in hard  he kept his response short: he stands by it, and fans can cry if they want to.

That line alone sent the comments section into overdrive.

Public Reaction Splits Down the Middle

Within hours, Peter’s name was trending across Nigerian Twitter and Instagram. Fans flooded his posts  some calling the move childish, others saying he has every right to reclaim his own identity. A section of supporters argued that after everything the brothers have been through publicly, nobody should be surprised.

The uproar has since spread beyond Nigeria, with diaspora fans and entertainment blogs across Africa and the UK picking up the story.

Background: A Brotherhood That Broke Publicly

P-Square was one of the biggest acts to ever come out of Nigeria. Peter and Paul built a career spanning two decades, selling out arenas and collecting hits across the continent. Then in 2017, it fell apart  publicly, messily, and painfully for fans who grew up with their music. A brief reunion in 2021 raised hopes. It did not last. Since the split, both brothers have continued solo careers, but the relationship between them has remained cold and, at times, openly hostile on social media.

What the Birthday Move Really Signals

Sharing a birthday as twins is not just a calendar detail. For many Nigerian families, it carries cultural and emotional significance that runs deep. Peter choosing to separate that date  publicly reads as more than a personal preference. It is a statement.

Whether it signals another deterioration in the brothers’ relationship or simply Peter drawing a firm line around his own life, the timing has people talking and guessing.
